Grade 1 Commercial Mortise Locks
When a hardware schedule calls for a Grade 1 mortise lock, it is asking for an ANSI/BHMA A156.13 lockbody on a commercial or institutional door -- the lock that sits in a pocket in the door edge, not a cylindrical lock bored through the face. The five series on this page are built for that spec: Sargent 8200, Accentra 8800FL, Corbin Russwin ML2000, Hager 3800, and PDQ MR.
What is the difference between a mortise lock and a cylindrical lock?
A mortise lockset takes its name from the mortise: a rectangular pocket cut into the door edge. The lockbody goes in that pocket, and the levers or knobs mount on the faces. A cylindrical lockset is a different door prep and a different lockbody -- it installs through a bored hole in the face of the door. Specifiers write mortise when the opening was drawn that way, or when the job needs the heavier steel case and the function range a Grade 1 mortise series is cataloged for.
Which Grade 1 mortise series is on the schedule?
If the set already names 8200, 8800FL, ML2000, 3800, or MR, open that card. If you are comparing manufacturers, the cards state what each catalog prints for grade, handing, and warranty. Functions, trims, and finishes are on the series page -- this page is the manufacturer crosswalk, not a substitute for the function list.

The Sargent 8200 Series is a heavy-duty mortise lock certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13, Series 1000, Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1 with standard trims. The lockbody re-hands without opening the case.

ASSA ABLOY Accentra 8800FL Series mortise locks are ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 certified. The lock body has field-reversible lever handing and latchbolt. Mechanical 8800 Series locks carry a ten-year warranty.

ML2000 Series
Corbin Russwin ML2000 Series mortise locks are certified ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000, Operational and Security Grade 1. The heavy-gauge steel lockcase re-hands without disassembling the case.
