Basic requirements for ADA-compliant grab bar installations:
1. Structural Strength & Diameter
- Weight Capacity: Grab bars and their mounting hardware must be able to support at least 250 pounds of force.
- Diameter: The gripping surface must have an outside diameter between 1.25 inches and 2 inches. If the bar is not round, the perimeter must be between 4 and 4.8 inches.
- Surface: The bars must be free of any sharp or abrasive elements. The edges should have a radius of at least 1/8 inch.
2. Spacing and Clearance
- Wall Clearance: There must be a space of exactly 1.5 inches between the grab bar and the wall. This allows for a solid grip while preventing a user's arm from getting stuck behind the bar.
- Obstructions: There should be at least 1.5 inches of clearance below the bar and 12 inches of clearance above any horizontal bar from objects like towel dispensers or shelves.
3. Mounting Heights
- Horizontal Bars: These must be installed between 33 inches and 36 inches above the finished floor, measured to the top of the gripping surface.
