Sargent 589 EN Shim Kit | For 8600, 8800, & 8900 Series Exit Devices
The Sargent 589 EN is a specialized architectural spacer kit designed to ensure a level and secure installation of Sargent 80 Series Exit Devices. When a door face features a glass lite frame or decorative molding that prevents the panic bar from sitting flush, these 1/8" shims provide the necessary clearance. Finished in EN (Aluminum Enamel), this kit provides a clean, professional match for aluminum storefronts and silver-toned commercial doors.
Precision Leveling & Installation Features
- Universal 80 Series Support: Engineered specifically for the Sargent 8600 (Concealed Vertical Rod), 8800 (Rim), and 8900 (Mortise) series exit devices.
- Main Chassis Alignment: Includes (2) 1/8" shims to lift the primary pushpad chassis away from the door face, preventing the mechanism from binding against glass frames.
- End Cap Stability: Includes (2) 1/8" shims for the end cap assembly, ensuring the entire length of the exit device is supported and level across the door.
- Durable EN Finish: The Aluminum Enamel coating offers a corrosion-resistant finish that seamlessly matches standard satin chrome (US26D) or aluminum (US28) hardware.
- Eliminates Mechanical Binding: By creating a flat mounting plane, these shims prevent the internal springs and sliders from hanging up, ensuring smooth emergency egress.

Important Installation Note:
When utilizing the Sargent 589 shim kit on doors equipped with outside trim (levers or thumbpieces), please ensure that your hardware dimensions are adjusted. Because the shims move the device 1/8" further from the door face, the spindle length, thumbpiece tailpiece, and thru bolt length must be increased accordingly to ensure proper engagement and security.
The Sargent 589 is an essential "truck stock" item for any commercial locksmith. It is far more professional and stable to use factory-spec shims than to use stacked washers, which can cause the device to wobble or pull away from the door over time. For a permanent, high-security installation, we recommend using thru bolts to ensure the device is clamped tightly to the door leaf, even with the added shim depth.
